What Is the Gottman Method?
A plain-language introduction to Gottman-based couples work on communication, friendship, conflict and repair.
An approach to everyday relationship patterns
The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy that pays attention to friendship, communication, conflict and repair. I use it to examine how partners respond to each other in ordinary moments as well as disagreements. It offers ways to make a difficult exchange more specific and understandable.
A complaint can become a clearer request
Compare naming an unfinished chore with judging your partner's entire character. The first gives you something practical to discuss; the second can invite defensiveness. I may help you describe what happened, how it affected you and what you are requesting, without turning that request into a demand for agreement.
Small attempts at connection matter
Connection can include sharing a worry, asking about a day or making a small invitation to spend time together. Partners may miss these attempts when distracted or resentful. I ask how each of you signals interest and how the other responds, including differences that are easy to misunderstand.
Repair means noticing what happens next
A repair attempt might be acknowledging a harsh tone or asking to restart a conversation. It still needs to be heard by the other person. In work on relationship issues, I explore which attempts land well, which feel dismissive and what accountability requires after a hurtful exchange.
When therapy can help
Gottman-based work may fit when partners want to understand recurring conflict and practice more direct communication. Couples therapy can include discussions about shared expectations, trust and friendship. The method does not decide your relationship's future or remove the need for both people to participate in the conversation.
How I work with this
I draw on the Gottman Method rather than presenting a single formula for every couple. I may combine attention to communication with EFT when emotional needs are hard to name. Family therapy can also address patterns involving relatives when those relationships are part of what you want to discuss.
Questions About This Topic
Is Gottman work only about arguing differently?+
No. I also consider friendship and how partners notice each other. A relationship can need attention in ordinary interactions, even when disagreements are relatively quiet.
Do you assign one partner responsibility for everything?+
I examine both partners' responses while taking specific behavior seriously. Understanding an interaction does not mean treating every action as equally helpful or harmful.
Does using this approach promise that we stay together?+
No approach can promise that outcome. I work with the concerns and goals you bring, including uncertainty about what comes next for the relationship.
