Quarter-Life Transitions: New Jobs, Moves and Breakups

Why change in your 20s and early 30s can feel so unsettling, even when it is change you chose.

Several changes at once

Your 20s and early 30s can stack major changes on top of each other: a first serious job, a move, a breakup, friends scattering to different cities. Each one alone takes energy. Together they can leave you feeling unsure of who you are or what you actually want next.

Even wanted change brings loss

A promotion can still mean missing the team you left. Moving in with a partner can still mean grieving your own apartment. I find that people judge themselves for feeling sad about a good change. Making space for both feelings usually makes the change easier to settle into.

Comparison makes it louder

Scrolling past engagements and job announcements can make your own timeline look late. Those snapshots rarely show the doubt behind them. We can look at which expectations are actually yours and which ones you absorbed from family, culture or social media, and decide what to keep.

Breakups at this stage

A breakup in your 20s can touch your plans, your friend group and your sense of the future at the same time. It is reasonable for it to hurt more than people expect. Grief, anger and relief may all appear within one week, sometimes within one afternoon.

When therapy can help

Consider support when a transition leaves you stuck, anxious or unlike yourself for weeks. Life transitions are one of the most common reasons young adults and professionals reach out. You do not need a crisis; wanting a clearer head before a big decision is a good reason to talk.

How I work with this

I often use solution-focused therapy to clarify what you want the next chapter to look like, and CBT for the worries that crowd out that picture. If the transition stirs older family patterns, we may explore those too. Evening appointments can make it easier to fit sessions around a new job.
