Online Therapy or In-Person Therapy: Which Fits You?
How to weigh online and in-person sessions based on privacy, schedule, comfort and the kind of work you want to do.
Both formats can work well
Online and in-person therapy use the same methods and the same attention. The better choice is usually the one you can attend consistently. At Carter Cares you can meet at our office at 16 Madison Square West, by Madison Square Park, or online from anywhere in New York State.
When online tends to fit
Online sessions can suit a packed workday, a long commute, a new parent's schedule or anyone outside Manhattan. You skip travel time and can log on from a familiar room. You do need to be physically in New York State during each session, and a private spot with a steady connection.
When in person tends to fit
Some people find it easier to open up away from home, roommates or a partner in the next room. Walking into an office can also mark a clear start and end to the hour. Couples sometimes prefer sharing a physical room, though many do well on a screen too.
Privacy at home
If home feels crowded, try headphones, a parked car or a white noise machine outside the door. I will check in about privacy at the start of online sessions. If you cannot speak freely on a given day, we can adjust how we use the time or move that session.
When therapy can help, in either format
The reasons to start are the same either way: anxiety that will not settle, burnout, a loss, or a relationship stuck in one argument. Online therapy in New York opens access across the state, and evening appointments make either format easier to fit around work.
How I work with this
Many clients mix formats, meeting in person most weeks and online when weather or travel gets in the way. I use the same approaches, including CBT, EFT and the Gottman Method, in both settings. We can revisit the format whenever your life or preferences change.

Yes. You can move between in person and online sessions as your schedule changes.
Can I do online therapy while traveling outside New York?+
Sessions require you to be in New York State at the time, so we would plan around the trip.
